Do you think you could play every day for 30 days?
Last year, I started practicing yoga at home. I wanted to get in better shape and I really enjoy doing yoga. However, memberships to yoga studios can be pricey and it also meant having to drive in traffic after work, which I really didn’t want to do. And, like most anything, you get the most benefit out of yoga if you do it every day. I found a YouTube Channel that I really liked and it had a 30-day challenge. Most of the videos were only 20 minutes and some were even only 10 minutes. These short videos meant I could always find time to get in a yoga session. This same idea applies to playing your bassoon. The challenge is to play your bassoon every single day, no matter how long. Whether it’s 10 minutes of scales, a solid hour on your solo, or having a band rehearsal, just play every day. If you are on vacation and absolutely cannot bring your bassoon, you can substitute listening to a recording of whatever piece you’re working on, or a recording of a great bassoonist. You could also put a calendar on your fridge and put a sticker on each day that you practice. Remember, it doesn’t matter how long your practice session is, but rather that you do it each day. Also, taking this challenge doesn't mean you have to play every day for the rest of your life. In fact, that's probably not a very good idea. Instead, it's a challenge to build good, consistent practice habits. Good luck!
